Denmark

Scandinavia’s Delight

Fascinating architecture, long sandy beaches and arguably the best pastries in the world – all that and more is what Denmark has to offer. Not only is it a gateway to the rest of the Scandinavian countries, it stuns with beautiful landscapes, beautiful castles and its vibrant capital Copenhagen. On this page, you’ll find everything you need to know about the vast and varied regions that Denmark has to offer.

The Capital

The capital of Denmark is called one of the safest, happiest and friendliest places in the world. Treat your eyes to the beauty of Nyhavn and its brightly colored houses or shop around Copenhagen’s largest shopping area, one of the longest pedestrian-only shopping avenues around the world! Visit Tivoli Gardens amusement park, which is open in summer and served as an inspiration for Disneyland. Copenhagen’s citadel “Kastellet”, constructed in the form of a pentagram with bastions at its corners, was founded by the Danish King Christian IV in 1626. Close by you can find the iconic little Mermaid sculpture – one of Copenhagen’s most famous tourist attraction! The autonomous district Christiania is a green and car-free area in which an alternative society is practiced. Houses are not bought but applied for and given, and they are the homes to many artists, craftsmen, musicians, organic cafés and restaurants.

Zealand

Peek into the Danish history and admire the ancient city of Roskilde, one of Denmark’s oldest cities and located just outside of Copenhagen. Roskilde used to be Denmark’s capital from 960 to 1536. When you get the chance to visit this city in June, make sure to enjoy one of Europe’s largest music festivals that find place there annually. In the south of Roskilde you will find the Tram Museum Skjoldenæsholm, one of the world’s largest of its kind. Do not miss to stop by Præstø – one of many seaside towns along the coast of Zealand. Other attractions in Zealand are Trelleborg Viking Ring Fortress, Dragsholm Castle and more!

North Jutland

You can lose yourself in the wilderness of Jutland – also known as the Cimbrian Peninsula, in the North of Denmark. Some of the largest cities in the Danish section of Jutland are Aarhus and Aalborg. Aarhus, Denmark’s second largest city, offers creative vibes and quirky museums and statues all around the city. A must-see is the Old Town – “Den Gamle By”. This unique attraction offers a fascinating journey back in history. Furthermore the city offers wonderful art museums and the Tivoli Friheden theme park, as well as Scandinavia’s largest concert hall in Scandinavia, a Botanical Garden with fascinating tropical houses and much more! Aalborg, the northernmost city of Denmark provides a wonderful base for a short and relaxed break. The most popular place in the north of Jutland is Skagen, a lovely little town where two clashing seas meet, Skagerrak and Kattegat. Statistically, this is Denmark’s sunniest place!

South Jutland

South Jutland is a gentle, open land, bordered by Little Belt to the east and the Wadden Sea National Park and UNESCO heritage to the west. The city of Billund is home to Denmark’s most popular attraction outside of Copenhagen, especially for families: the oldest Legoland amusement park with Lego featured rides and where miniature versions of landmarks from all over the world are recreated with Lego bricks. When it comes to calm, family-friendly beaches, South Jutland is the right choice to be. There are many beaches dotted along the Little Belt coast, the island of Als and the Kegnæ peninsula. Head into the far south of Denmark to the island of Rømø to visit the widest beaches in Northern Europe. Whether you want to walk, take part in beach sports or simply enjoy the sand with the family, these beaches are big enough for everyone.

Funen

Denmark’s garden island Funen (Fyn) is located between the island of Zealand and the mainland. It is the second largest island of Denmark with its gently rolling hills, orchards, hedgerows and thatched, half-timbered farmhouses. The Funen countryside hosts countless farms, historical sites like Egeskov Castle, and the scenic South Fyn Archipelago. Visit Odense and walk through the charming high streets of the birthplace of one of the country’s best loved authors – Hans Christian Andersen.
